“I know that there is nothing better for people than to be happy and to do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil – this is the gift from God.” Ecclesiastes 3:12-13

I often tell my friends, “I’ll never say no to a board game.” For as long as I can remember, I’ve jumped at the chance to shuffle a deck of cards or set out a board game. Whether it’s a simple, nostalgic game of Go Fish, a strategic round of Cribbage or a long, thoughtful evening spent over Viticulture, I’ve found that the joy of a game yields something far greater than just a win.

A Tapestry of Memories

Growing up in a large family, our Sunday afternoons were often spent playing the classic games of Risk or Monopoly. In the heart of winter, playing games is a much a comfort to me as it was warming up after getting fresh air in the January frost. Some of my most treasured memories are of starting a grand board game on New Year’s Eve, and embracing the warmth of everyone gathered into the next year.

Though we don’t always have time for the long, strategic games anymore, my family never has a deck of cards far from reach. It’s our favourite way to slow down. On special occasions, we find the time for a few rounds of cards or a quick social game. Does your family do the plastic wrap ball game during the holidays? It’s a festive competition each Christmas!

One year, my parents were invited to a community cribbage tournament. Within a week, I had learned the rules and haven’t let my skills go dusty since – playing weekly and even organizing my own tournaments.

Even when I lived on my own, I sought out a new community of fellow players. My knowledge of board games expanded at this point. I learned everything from intricate strategy games to lighthearted party games and polyominos.

Cultivating the Mind and Soul

I truly believe there is nourishment found in these board and card games. We step away from our digital screens, spend quality time with friends and take a gentle rest day from the daily chaos.

Just as different crop provide different nutrients, I find every game nourishes the mind differently. Card games keep my mental math sharp, while placement games teach me the patience of thinking many turns ahead. My social skills are strengthened by party games, while polyominos feel like a puzzle for the brain.

I’ve been trying to calm my life and enjoy each moment. Games help with patience and spending quality time with friends. Similar to my sewing, both crafts invite me to slow down and appreciate the process. There is a quiet joy in building something, whether it is a winning strategy or an article of clothing, that brings a calmness which I cherish.

One of my close friends had to relearn the gift of speech two decades ago. During her recovery, games became her crutch. To this day, she is living proof that a game is a powerful tool for healing and mental resilience.

Our Challenges: Filming the Fun

Jo and I have been filming some of our favourite games and challenges for our YouTube channel. It is truly a highlight of the videos! Whether we’re guessing mystery objects, dealing a fresh hand of cards, or foraging for the healthiest snacks at the local market, it’s a joyful way to spend time with friends. If you’re looking for a bit of fun and chaos, come take a look at our YouTube shorts.

Honouring the Seasons

As the frost melts and garden season begins, the time indoors naturally shortens. Soon, Jo and I will be spending more hours in the garden and soaking up the golden sunshine. That is why I find it so important to cherish what each season has to offer. I want to embrace the slow, quiet joy of the winter before the busy, outdoor joy of the summer begins.

So, what game are you planning to bring to the table next?

With calmness and grace,

Hannah
