Picking dandelions as a farm kid was something my sister and I would do. Often followed by presenting our beautiful bouquet for our mom, who reluctantly put them in vase for display. Or casting whimsical wishes upon blowing the white seeds as we naively spread the dandelion love.

When we are young, we see the beauty in the yellow flowers but as we get older, they become obnoxious weeds with deep roots. Our minds become clouded and these once captivating flowers don’t fit the landscape we are striving to achieve.

Lately, all I see is weeds. The problems, the imperfections, the things that need fixing. With this idea of what the yard should look like, I’m often missing seeing the beauty that I once saw through innocent eyes. I’m forgetting about the benefits and uses of dandelions in this struggle for perfection. Not seeing or embracing the blessings around me.

I know as humans we aren’t perfect and that’s why we need Jesus. There’s beauty in the imperfect. He knew it from the beginning. Jesus embraces us and calls us just we are. Lasting transformation, with many dandelion seeds to share, comes through Him.

Often, we know Jesus loves us but to fully grasp it deep in our soul can be another story. To fully accept ourselves with all our flaws and nuances, will come when we fully let Jesus in and let the roots grow dandelion deep. It’s a mindset shift to look at the imperfection and the unavailing constant weeding we attempt to do ourselves and to instead see the beauty and the work that God is accomplishing through us and in us.

It’s ok to be a dandelion in what seems to be a field of wildflowers.

Prayer:

Holy Spirit take control of my mind.

Help me not to overthink and strive.

Make me more self-aware of when I’m doing so.

God help me to let go of the fear of judgement that drives this busyness, overthinking and perfection mindset.

Help me to see the beauty and the bigger picture instead of the imperfections and the weeds.

To truly know, deep in my soul, the love you hold for me.

Amen.
